His work is a HOT COMMODITY and will surprise first, and then fascinate forever. The ceramics are stylish, up-to-date and visionary and show his confidence and mastery of materials and processes.

The extensive portfolio of unique, original and timeless pieces is created with pure performance, discovery and fearless attitude. Gerrit endeavours to create new and exciting work, with no regards to inhibition but to create works that resonate with expressive qualities and passionate research.

During R&D sessions I develop mediums for the other artists to use in projects and commissions.  I often "test" these developments by creating works of art as well.

The structure and use of clay and paint let faces and figures communicate with the viewer, the patina of action and effect as exercised by me the artist relate a deep stream of emotion that will have an enduring and lasting, but changing effect on you.

Crazily quirky, that’s what shines through in Gerrit’s collection; with every aspect of the design Gerrit had fun.

Her work is intimate and has a classic contemporary look, the drawings floats effortlessly over the ceramic canvass, reflecting a purity and uncluttered composition, her ceramic creations is honest and the inviting simplicity will refresh your spirit every time you look at it.

The Dream Figure

When I paint the human figure, I am painting human emotion. The content of these arttiles is not of the figure as such, but the essence of being. I have always been interested in the human state and how one reacts to outside influences, and similarly how these influences act on the human spirit.

I begin each piece from an impulse and desire for discovery, unearthing the hidden form by way of line and volume. I consequently seek to relate the image I see through building up, and at times taking away layers using line, graphic or emotive; colour, bold or monotone; and with texture created by manipulating the layers until the image reveals itself.

It is as if each arttile has a story to tell.

Cats have been with us for thousands of years, from as far back as Egyptian time where they were worshiped, till today where any cat lover worth his/her salt will agree that cats are still revered and served while gracing us with their charm and companionship.

The hand made ceramic art boxes and tiles are ideal for indoor or outdoor display, featuring individual cat portraits with a jewel like quality to accentuate the noble bearing of cats. The focus must squarely rest on the cat whether it be in a pensive mood, at play, at rest, grooming or in a whimsical moment I want these portraits to continue intrigue you.

Her work ranges from immaculately realistic fynbos and floral studies to stylised interpretations of 16th and 17th century French, Dutch, Portuguese and Spanish manuscripts and artefacts.

Her ceramic work is bold and intense, some extroverted and flamboyant but always sensitive and peaceful.

Her ceramics, with a hearty splash of colour, will harmonize your daily life and offer a comforting embrace.

Ruan Hoffmann

Ruan Hoffmann

Ruan Hoffmann

Ruan enjoyed an extremely fruitfull and creative period at our studio.

An artist by trade,Ruan Hoffmann has turned to working with ceramics over the past 14 years. He uses the three-dimensional surfaces of plates, bowls, tile panels and small sculptures as canvasses for his icon-like images. His art is often infused with personal concerns about identity and sexuality.

Ceramics' popularly thought of status as a craft - rather than a contemporary form of art production - is an issue Hoffmann eagerly subverts. By focusing on the medium's fragility, combined with a discriminating eye for detail and painstaking craftmanship, the artist finds a sympathetic vehicle for expressing concerns that span both the present and the past.

Unlike some other art forms, ceramic art often forces the artist to negotiate with the build-in idiosyncrasies of the medium. Casual and accidental elements frequently interrupt the process and induce surpricing end results. These spontaneous mishaps are part and parcel of the material properties of the ceramic medium itself, which is profoundly attached to the earth and its unpredictable processes.

Southern Art Ceramics helped this talented and passionate artist after he enquired for help from us to pursue his dream to become an artist businessman. We mentored him for three years and then arranged another three year mentorship and art course with Spier Arts Academy. Here he flourished and showed true dedication and passed with flying colors. He has since opened his own studio with fellow artists.
